Week 12: March 22 – 28

Monday [3/22]:  Jason’s school schedule shifted a little this morning as he prepares to start attending in person next week. Classes for him now start an hour earlier so he had to set an alarm to be up in time. I ended up walking down with KD to school around one and then getting in a little walk. We had some crazy weather today one minute it was sunny and nice and the next minute it was hailing.

Katie made dinner tonight after piano lessons. She prepared tomato soup and grilled cheese which was delicious. I watched the last movie I’d selected with my Amazon credits this evening. I’m enjoying the freedom of not having to close my exercise circles every day.

Tuesday [3/23]:  I cooked up a bunch of chicken this morning with my sous vide - this is only my second time using it and I’m still not sold on it.

I got an email from our elementary school asking for a picture of Katie and Drew to use for the yearbook so I snapped a picture in front of our garage this morning.  I didn’t take them down to their school on picture day because I never by the individual picture packages and didn’t think of the fact that the school uses those pictures for the yearbook.

5th Grade

2nd Grade

I drove KD to school this afternoon and headed straight to the nail salon to get my feet in decent shape for the Arizona sunshine this weekend. It’s so nice to be pampered every once in a while.

Jason made a quadruple batch of taquitos for dinner tonight. Half for now and half to put in the freezer for another day. We had guacamole and Mexican rice and everything tasted delicious.  I met up with some girlfriends this evening just to catch up. It seems like it’s been a while since we’ve all been able to get together.

Wednesday [3/24]:  Jason had an ortho appointment late this morning and finally got his expander out after over four months. On the way home he declared that he’s probably already over halfway done based on how much his teeth have moved.  I explained to him he’s got a long road ahead still, but yes he’s teeth look SO much better. He’s been such a trooper about the whole thing.

We also had our tennis lesson this afternoon which was so fun! Dusko was super impressed with how well we played today which we is likely due to the extra practice we got after our lesson last week. He really was very positive and complementary.  It felt great to play well and not struggle so much to have our bodies move the way that he has asked us to. Carly had a BOGO at Chipotle that she wanted to take advantage of. Tonight was her night to cook so I think an added incentive was that if we stopped at Chipotle she wouldn’t have to cook dinner. She helped pay to feed the three of us and we ran a couple quick errands before heading home.

Tonight I lead my first zoom call which was a general conference bingo activity for the activity day kids in primary. I thought it went well. We kept the meeting just to the 40 minutes allowed on a basic zoom account which was plenty of time to create the boards and play one round. I also had a meeting afterward with some of the other leaders that have recently been called and the primary president to figure out when we can start meeting in person. It’s so tricky with social distancing and needing to share the building with youth, etc.. We’re hopeful that we can get the kids in person at the end of April.

I received a text this afternoon from our piano teacher who has been struggling with custody battles for several years. She asked me to write a character reference recommendation for her and as I was working on that the sister missionaries showed up at her house.  One of the sisters offered a prayer for Kori in her home and brought the spirit into that room and into Kori’s life. She texted me afterward and shared how the experience served as a reminder that she has a loving healthy father who cares about her. She has struggled with other issues over the years and hasn’t been active in church so reading how this experience with the missionaries touched her was pretty special and touched my heart. I have a feeling that I am going to have a new fondness for missionaries, especially sister missionaries, now that we have a daughter going out to serve. I can’t wait for Abigail to have experiences like this.

Thursday [3/25]:  I was in Arizona again this weekend.  Justin was home with the kids and made plans to meet up with his parents tonight at Ivar’s to take advantage of a BOGO coupon that was good through the end of the month.  Grandpa also treated everyone to Krispy Kreme.

Friday [3/26]:  Apparently Justin ordered Katie the wrong kind of fish last night so he and Katie went back today for lunch.

Sunday [3/28]:  Ten years ago today we moved to Snoqualmie. We’ve added one more kiddo to our crew since and sent our first off the college. A decade in Auburn and a decade here. Time just keeps flying by.

It took a few years for Jeanne Hansen Park to be built.
We love having this great park in our neighborhood.

The kids loved the little park across the street from our house.
Since we were the only house on our street for over a year it felt like our own little playground.

First Day of School

We had so few kids in our neighborhood that the girls got picked up in a little bus

I convinced the family to indulge me with a quick trip to the falls this afternoon to commemorate our 10 year anniversary.

I’m so grateful for the growth, experiences and friendships we’ve made in Snoqualmie and the PNW in general.  I know without a doubt that moving up to Snoqualmie was the right decision for us and especially for Abigail and Carly.  Neither of them had many friends their age in Auburn that were members of the church.  Personally, I can confidently say that I’m a much more confident woman, wife and mother now than I was 10 or 15 years ago.  I’m sure some of that growth and maturity would’ve still taken place had we not moved but I know that the friendships I’ve made here have changed and influenced me for the better.  An added bonus is that I’ve also been able to maintain the friendships I’d made in Auburn as well.

This anniversary led me to think about how my younger kids are doing as well.  I can’t say that Jason, Katie or Drew have a tight group of friends here.  Perhaps covid is partially to blame for that.  Jason has a couple buddies but none of them are members of our ward and none of them live close by so that makes it tough.  Katie’s current best buddy is the neighbor girl who is in kindergarten (Katie is in 5th grade).  Katie’s buddy is the younger sister of Drew’s best (and only?) friend who lives next door.  It’s a small, small circle for all three of them.  I’m hopeful that as Jason enters high school in the fall and starts seminary with kids from the three wards in the valley he’ll develop some close friendships.  I know that Abigail and Carly’s social lives picked up dramatically once they entered high school.  Our trip to Arizona last month really did show us how different our lives would be in a heavily saturated LDS community.  Some perks for sure with having lots of members.  On the flip side I also love that my kids are learning to stand strong in being different and that they have more opportunities to be an example of a faithful member of the church.  Pros and cons.

Anyhow, I truly do LOVE where we live and the people we are blessed to call friends.  It’s been a wonderful ten years in Snoqualmie and TWENTY years in Washington (how is that even possible???).

Here’s a throwback to our five year Snoqualmie anniversary – guess we’ll have to follow up with a 15 year photo at the falls… with only two kiddos left at home {gasp!}

This evening before turning off Drew’s lights we spent a little time looking at his Pokémon cards.  I love to hear him talk excitedly about certain characters and explain which ones can evolve and what they look like as an evolved creature.  I really don’t know anything about them, but Justin, Jason, Katie and Drew have gotten quite into it over the past few months.

Bonus Room Refresh

I think a lot of people did some reevaluating of their homes after being quarantined in them for much of 2020.  We’ve wanted to revamp our bonus room for ages but have never made it a priority.  Finally in August 2020 we decided to do something about it and I reached out to a designer that several people have used to ask her to help us come up with a game plan.  We have had help in the past from designers that worked for a specific store we were purchasing furniture from but that’s always been complimentary.  I won’t get into all the details but in summary the process started with a very uncomfortable conversation about money (she charges by the hour so it’s quite open ended) after that initial convo I decided to not bring up her fees again and just go with the flow, trust in the process and fork out the dough (totally against my nature) which did indeed make the process much less stressful.  At the very end I did express a bit of hesitation about paying for her to accessorize the room which led to another uncomfortable conversation (even slightly heated) which tainted the experience a bit, but I’m still glad we went through with it and we’re overall very happy with the results.

Here’s our before picture…

Our first sectional

Our first piano

Our first kitchen table

Leftover cabinets from under our kitchen bar

Toys and Lego tubs everywhere

Still the flat builder’s paint on the wall

No window coverings

This weird wide angle shot shows all the stuff we had tucked behind the couch

And I’ll put in an after picture here just for dramatic effect…

It didn’t take long for the designer to come up with a plan.  She gave us links to all the pieces she recommended as well as a few alternatives.  I loved her ideas and we basically decided to go with all of her top choices.

My only hesitation was the floral fabric which would be used on a few pillows.  I’m not a floral person and didn’t want the room to read pretty or formal in any way.  She spent some time (which meant I spent some $$$ coming up with some alternative fabric) but in the end we still went with the floral because it tied all the colors together so well.  We did add a geometric print for an additional pillow so I guess it wasn’t a totally waste of time and money – though I did learn that I should be more careful with what I say because it may end up costing me, literally – ha!

We painted the walls ourselves (Carly, Justin and me).  It’s supposed to be a light green, but like all paint colors in our house it reads more blue than green, but it’s still nice.

Only one last wall to paint after we lugged that monster heavy piece of granite out of the room!

We also replaced our carpet which was LONG overdue.  I’ve dragged my feet on getting this done for years because the thought of having to move all of our stuff around was overwhelming.  It was a pain, but totally doable.  I knew the biggest headache would be moving the cabinets in the bonus room with the granite top.  Thankfully because we were replacing it we were able to move it to the garage until I sold it and didn’t have to move it back into the room.  We got a discount on the carpet by working with the company the designer uses so that was a nice perk.

We carpeted the bedrooms first and moved everything into the bonus room – yikes!

Look at the nice new carpet!

We ordered the furniture in September, but it took until November for the first piece to arrive.  We ordered a super cool cabinet from Anthropologie.  Unfortunately it arrived with a small nick on the back corner.  Anthropologies’ customer service was INCREDIBLE.  They gave me the option to replace it with a new one or keep the current one with a significant discount.  They also offered to match the current black Friday pricing so in the end I got it for 60-70% off retail.  A total score and the damage is hardly noticeable.

The bulk of the furniture was delivered on New Year’s Eve (over three months after we ordered it) – our new sectional is so much bigger than our old one and a much better fit for our large family.

I was totally not loving the color of the ottomans when they arrived.  I don’t necessarily love them with the color of the carpet and walls.  It helped when we added some pattern in the room, but I still wish we wouldn’t have gotten something so light and pastel.

Artwork was probably the toughest decision for me.  The designer sent us several options which all worked great with the colors in the room, but none of them “spoke to us” and I didn’t want to buy something just because it looked nice.  After stewing over it for several weeks, and with the help of some friends, I finally decided to order a bunch of travel posters off Etsy instead.  It was quite the process to find posters that weren’t tacky and with colors that worked in the room and with each other.  I also had to ask a few designers to print custom sizes since sizing is different outside of the US.  I LOVE what we ended up with and our designer was shocked how well it looked.  Win-Win!

Before Abigail headed back to BYU she helped me figure out the best layout for the posters.  It took us hours!  Certain colors didn’t look good next to each other and the shape of the temple in Bali was too similar to the Eiffel Tower so they couldn’t be next to each other.  It was quite the process but in the end we nailed it!

The designer came on January 7 to deliver the pillows and hang the drapes.  I wasn’t expecting her to accessorize the room.  In fact the last time we’d spoken (the uncomfortable falling out) I’d told her that we’d pass on the accessories and just call it good.  She couldn’t let it go though and I’m glad she didn’t because when she brought us up to the room for the “reveal” we were blown away.  The accessories made all the difference!  She comped us for part of her time but we still paid for some of it but I never could have put the finishing touches on it so I have no regrets.  We ended up keeping most of the accessories so she really did a great job.  She also had her photographer come take pictures.  She portrays the photos as a “gift” to the client but it’s also great for her own advertising as well.  They’re fun to have I guess.

The photographer didn’t take any pictures of the full wall with the Anthopologie cabinet because we were still missing the chairs for the game table.  They were delivered on January 29.  I love the simple look of them and that they are made from a durable metal – and quite comfy too.  I finally sold our old oak table in March and now we can officially call this room DONE!  (Actually we still need to add something on the wall above the game table but I’m in no rush.)

We love the room and spend way more time in here than we ever have.  It’s more “pretty” than I probably would’ve liked but I think we were able to find a good balance adding some fun personal touches and everything is super durable so it’s suits us well.  So glad to have it done!

Week 11: March 15 - 21

Monday [3/15]:  We woke up to some great news this morning as we received word that the Seattle Temple would be one of the first temples in the states to open the baptistery. This is surprising yet wonderful news as Washington tends to be quite slow at re-opening, but our cases are some of the lowest in the nation so logistically it makes sense. We received more great news that after General Conference in April we will start attending in-person sacrament meeting every week. This makes us hopeful that we will be able to serve in the temple soon. We also talked to Abigail today about scheduling a time for her to receive her endowment. I think we’re leaning toward doing it the same weekend of Drew’s baptism. That will be quite the weekend!

I’m going to start receiving alerts on my watch about my severe decrease in activity level. I spent most of the day in the office. I need to finish up our taxes, go through some more Hawaii photos, and other general office related tasks. Carly made some cilantro lime rice salad bowls for dinner and then we had to come follow me and covered the last two weeks of material.

Tuesday [3/16]:  I reached out to my friend Andrea this morning to see if she wanted to go for a walk so we met up at Centennial Park and walked several miles together catching up on each other’s recent travels and other bits of life. It was a beautiful day again today which always feels great and I love that Katie and Drew play outside more on nice days. After they headed off to school Justin and I went to MOD Pizza for lunch to take advantage of the lunch deal that they have going on this month. Jason made lasagna for his first time today for dinner. I told him around 3 o’clock to check the recipe to see how long it would take which he sloughed off. When he finally got everything layered in the pan he realized that it needed to cook for over two hours so we had a very late dinner tonight! After KD went to bed I watched one of three movies that I purchased on Amazon with credits at the end of February that are expiring soon. I choose the slow shipping option on Amazon around Christmas time and tend to rack up a whole bunch of digital credits.  Justin took Jason on a Pokémon walk for much longer than expected so Jason didn’t get to bed till nearly 11pm, but he doesn’t have any early morning classes on Wednesdays so Tuesday nights tend to be later nights for him anyhow.

Abigail’s friend Olivia opened her mission call today and got the exact same assignment as Abigail with the same start date.  What are the odds?  So exciting!

Wednesday [3/17]:  Jason only has one advisory class on Wednesday and it doesn’t start till later in the morning so he made some mint brownies this morning for a St. Patrick’s Day treat.  I enjoyed some leftover salad for lunch – one of my new favorites

We had tennis lessons this afternoon which flew by. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day and free things in general we stopped by Krispy Kreme after our lesson to pick up a free green donut.

Dusko, our tennis instructor mentioned that with the nice weather today we should try to hit some more so we headed straight to the court in our neighborhood after lessons and played for another hour or so. He also gave us some new balls. New to us though old for the club. Regardless they are a huge improvement from what we currently have so we were grateful for that. I jumped right into helping Katie make dinner when I got home. We cooked up some chicken and she made some pita pizzas for dinner which were gobbled up quickly followed by Jason’s brownies.

Thursday [3/18]:  I had a hair appointment in Covington this morning so shortly after I woke up I was out the door heading down Highway 18. I picked up a few free items at Chick-fil-A for breakfast and had a little extra time to read some of the book that I started in Hawaii before my appointment.

Abigail likes to send us pictures of her free food so I returned the favor

After my hair was done I went back to Chick-fil-A to redeem a free lunch item (and again tease Abigail with it)…

I was planning to pick up a few things at Walmart. As I was walking up to the Walmart doors someone in the parking lot told me that the store was closed. I had noticed that the parking lot was unusually empty, but I never would’ve thought that it was closed.

Apparently they had an outbreak of covid cases recently and have been closed for the last few days for a deep cleaning. I picked up a few things at Costco and then did a massive Crumbl run for four of my friends and of course I also got some cookies for myself. They are running a promo for the next 20 weeks where each week they will have at least one new flavor. This week they had three new flavors. So yummy!

I had a hard time getting motivated back home to do much including cooking dinner. I did get some of the house cleaned up and but I let the kids fend for themselves for dinner. Justin and I listened to a virtual fireside this evening on the new-ish youth program. We haven’t done well encouraging JK and now D to set and work on goals. Now that I’m serving in the primary perhaps I’ll be more helpful and provide some opportunities in our activities.

I watched my 2nd of 3 amazon movies tonight - Light Between Oceans which is based on a book I read several years ago. Not lighthearted at all but I enjoyed it.

Friday [3/19]:  I spent this morning putting together an activity for primary for next Wednesday. We’re still on Zoom so that’s an added challenge. I decided to have the kids make conference bingo cards so I created a bunch of clip art stickers they can put on their boards. Hopefully I can get into the church tomorrow to make all the copies so I don’t have to use a ton of my ink. I walked KD down to school and then continued to the dollar store to buy some smarties for the bingo activity.

Today is my friend Jenn’s birthday and when I reached out to her about getting together to celebrate she put together a triple date night with the Squires. She asked us to be at her house by 5:20pm and then we’d all head to dinner together but she kept the dinner location a secret. Turns out they were treating us to dinner at a very nice sushi restaurant in Bellevue. They ordered several sushi appetizers and I was brave enough to try the California roll with king crab in it. To be honest there were so many flavors there that I really couldn’t tell when I was eating the crab. It was fine but I didn’t want to eat any more than that since other people appreciate it so much more than I did. We also each ordered an entrée. They had a delicious chicken dish with some fried risotto and then each couple got a dessert to take back to their house. Super generous and super delicious!

We played a really fun game back at their house until close to midnight. They have introduced us to so many great games over there near 20 years that we’ve known them. This is another one that I think we might have to pick up for ourselves. We like the strategy type of games.

Saturday [3/20]:  We didn’t have much going on today so I was glad that we used a good portion of the morning to straighten up the house. With everybody home all the time it seems to get out of control a lot quicker. By no means did we get everything cleaned but it was improved. I was also able to meet with somebody this morning to sell the table we’ve had up in the bonus room since we moved here.

So long old school oak table!

We’ve had a new game table for a few months now and it was nice to finally get rid of the old one. I tend to be pretty patient when selling things because there’s always someone that’s willing to pay good money for it. We made $240 on the table that we bought 15+ years ago for less than $1000. I think that’s a pretty good trade. I also spent a good portion of the afternoon getting the little packets ready for our primary activity on Wednesday. Thankfully Katie was willing to help me with some of the cutting and bagging things up.

Abigail was off once again adventuring…

Tonight we had our first ward activity in over a year. They decided to host a drive-in movie at the church. An outdoor movie, in March, in the Pacific Northwest, is pretty chancy with our weather and it had been raining most of the day but miraculously the rain let up for the movie and it was perfect. Katie, Drew and I were all cozied up in the back and the ward provided some treats. I thought it was a great night!

Sunday [3/21]:  I woke up just in time to get onto my Relief Society call this morning. The lesson was on Elder Ballard’s talk, Watch and Pray Always. Natalie Hammer taught the lesson and had several people share some experiences which were really fantastic. I worked on editing some pictures this afternoon. I’ve been stuck on Valentine’s Day in Hawaii where we went on a day trip around the island and took over 1000 pictures - all that needed to be sorted through. I also had a temple recommend interview via FaceTime on the ward level and Carly had some meetings and schoolwork so we didn’t have come follow me until after dinner. Jason taught about putting on the armor of God and used Drew as his prop.

Jason asked if I wanted to play Quirkle after KD was in bed and Carly willingly joined us as well as Justin. I really do enjoy playing games with my family and an added bonus is that I won and as we looked through all the score cards in the game box that’s not unusual {cocky anyone?}.

Justin and I were able to catch up with Abigail tonight via FaceTime.  I think this may be the longest call I’ve been on since I was in high school.  One hour, 40 minutes!

Week 10.5: March 10 - 14

Wednesday [3/10]:  It felt crazy to already be going back to tennis today. We had tennis the day we went to Arizona and it seems like we got right back home to another tennis lesson. Today’s lesson was really great. I feel like there was some noticeable improvements in all of us. We spent the last half working on serves which is more challenging for me than for Carly and Jason. The lesson after us cancelled so Dusko ended up spending more time with us than we paid for which is a nice bonus. We didn’t have many options at home for food so I made pancakes from Krusteaz mix and scrambled up some eggs and bacon for dinner. The kids all had youth activities tonight. Being a new primary activity leader myself, I joined Katie and Drew on their zoom call and briefly introduced myself to the small group that joined. I thought it was interesting that Drew was the only boy there. We listened to a little message from the missionaries and then played a short game of Kahoot. Carly went to an in-person activity at the church and Jason attended a service activity outside. It’s so great to start to see some normal in-person activities going on. We also got word today that Jason will be returning to school in a couple weeks. It will only be in-person two days a week but we are excited about it.

Abigail was off hiking Angel’s Landing today which I discovered from her Instagram stories.  It also appeared to be snowing which caused my mother heart some anxiety.  In that case I suppose it’s better I didn’t know what she was doing until after she survived.

Thursday [3/11]:  I spent most of today shopping. We were pretty low on groceries so I decided to make the trek to Winco to restock. I also went to Costco, Walmart, and picked up some cookies at Crumbl for myself and two friends who expressed interest. Unfortunately when I got home I realized that my Crumbl order was messed up and I didn’t get any of the macadamia nut cookie that I was most excited about so I gave them a call and they refunded the entire order. Hard to complain about free cookies, but I was really looking forward to trying the Macadamia nut variety. I was hoping to play tennis this afternoon with Carly and Jason, Carly had a lot of homework to do so we didn’t get out of here until around 5:30pm so we ran out of daylight. It’s frustrating to me how hard it is for me to change my old tennis habits and put together the coordination to it as we’re being taught – particularly my serve today.

Friday [3/12]:  I got ready for the day immediately after waking up today and even made my bed. I was in the office just after 8:30am and ready to accomplish much. I was feeling good. The only thing that would’ve made it better was to have already closed my circles. My intentions were great but the reality is that I still have a house full of kids and Katie and Drew wrap up their online work around 10am and if I don’t want them turning to electronics I need to be involved. I studied scriptures this morning, made Jason some breakfast to eat after his first class (the kid is always hungry) and prepared some chicken salad for dinner. It always feels good to have some meals planned and makes dinner so much less stressful. I worked on office stuff until Carly and I had to leave around 3:30pm for her well child appointment. She hadn’t been to the doctor in two years so we needed a new physical for sports and she was due for an immunization. Not much going on this evening. Justin worked quite a bit and the kids enjoyed tech time. At 10pm I realized that I still needed around 140 move calories in order to close my circles for today. I was already pretty tired and knew that at some point soon I would stop the madness of keeping up my streak. So I decided to end it today. I feel mostly relieved but also about a little guilty because I could have gotten it done, though it would’ve taken me an hour and that was an hour I didn’t want to spend exercising. So today on March 12 the one-year anniversary of the Covid halt to life I let my streak go at 371 days.

I thought this was funny…

Little did we know that that 14 day halt to life would be much, much longer.

Saturday [3/13]:  It’s funny that I woke up this morning just before 8am and I typically would’ve make sure to get out of bed to count that hour toward my stand circle but today I didn’t have to. I sent a little text to the friends that have been following me along on this journey and it was funny to hear the responses of how proud they were of me. Funny that they weren’t proud of me necessarily for the 371 days, but proud of me for putting an end to it.

I splurged on some acai bowls at Costco (even on rebate it felt like a splurge) – Carly had one today and I was so disappointed how empty the bowls are.  Guess we’ll have to go back to Hawaii to get a decent acai.

I spent some time this morning going through old pictures for my friend Tracy’s 50th birthday later this month. It’s so fun to walk down memory lane and be reminded how grateful I am for these friendships that have lasted 20 years now. Around noon Carly was finally ready to head out and play tennis with Jason, Justin and me. We spent over an hour and had a good time practicing correct posture and also spent a little bit time on serves. We worked on some chores this afternoon. Not a single room in our house isn’t a mess. Typically I try to keep chores to weekdays (with online school) so our Saturdays are free but with all the travel that’s been going on we’ve gotten out of routine and the messes have been piling up. Justin suggested a date night tonight so we snuck out, ran a few errands and used up a gift card at Outback that I’ve been carrying around for many, many years. We topped off date night with a few episodes of FNL.

Sunday [3/14]:  Today we switched to our new church schedule of attending in-person twice a month which has shifted our second hour meetings to 9am (virtual) and sacrament (in-person) to 11am. 9am came early with the shift to day light savings today. I spent the first half of class getting ready for church while watching on my iPad - multi-tasking for the win! It was nice to attend church, but I really do miss having an opportunity to connect with people in the ward and we’re still social distancing at church with minimal contact with anyone outside our family. Justin and I dropped the kids off at home and then picked up a desk that someone was selling nearby. Jason will use it until Abigail starts her home MTC training.

Justin, Carly, and Jason had various meetings today so there wasn’t much family time this afternoon. Drew and I played battleship. He really wanted to play Monopoly but I couldn’t muster up the willingness to do that again. He clobbered me in battleship though and sunk all five of my ships before I even found his third.

It started snowing outside as we gathered for dinner. So crazy to have snow here mid-March and it seems even weirder since we’ve been in some warm climates recently. We had enough snow that the grass was totally covered.  We decided to watch a new Netflix movie called “Yes Day” tonight which was a fun movie for both parents and kids. Carly and I also watched an episode of Zoey’s and got caught up on that series before heading to bed.
