Go Seahawks!

You can't live in the Seattle area and not feel the pride and excitement of having the Seahawks playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday. The 12th man has taken over the city! Our elementary has been taking weekly pictures in support of the Hawks for the last month.

The kids are bringing home schoolwork integrated with Seahawk pride.   Spelling words, word finds, etc... Local businesses are showing their support of the Hawks. (We'll no doubt be enjoying 12 cent fries at McDonald's this weekend). Heck, we may even tune into the big game.

GO HAWKS

Sweetie

I sure love my Katie!

Doesn’t she look like such a sweet innocent little girl?

Turns out she’s not so innocent.

And she really likes sweets.

My Mom kept a candy jar stocked full of Mike & Ikes while we were staying with her.  As we were packing to head back home she gave Abigail all the leftovers – it was a lot.  Abigail kept her stash in her closet and last week she came home from school to find her bag was suddenly near empty.  She quickly suspected Katie and after a little investigation found handfuls of candy hidden under Katie’s bed.  Katie denied any involvement – she was reprimanded and wasn’t allowed any candy or dessert as a punishment.  But secretly Abigail and I laughed over it.  That night Katie got out of bed to use the restroom shortly after we’d tucked her in.  I noticed she was munching on something and saw that she had a handful of Mike & Ikes.  She again denied any involvement – hands full of candy, gummy remains in her teeth, and a few strays in her bed – um, guilty and seriously, not a very discreet thief!  She sat in time out until she finally admitted she took more candy.  The next day she had to serve Abigail by making her bed, doing laundry, etc…

I wish I could say Katie learned her lesson and never stole again however when Abigail got home from school that day she discovered more candy was missing which she quickly found stashed in Katie’s closet.  The first time was funny, the third not so much – she’s still sweet, but she’s not very innocent.

8 Months

Drew turned 7 months old the day before we left for Utah and just three days before Christmas so alas no separate milestone post for that month.  Lots of major changes for Drew since his 6 month post.

Is eating foods much better.  We seriously have Carly to thank for this break through. She had more success getting him to eat than any of us. This usually entailed distracting Drew with a Baby Mozart DVD then sneaking food in his mouth. He’s at the point now that he willingly eats "solids" (baby food) at least twice a day.  Carly still enjoys feeding him which is a huge help to me.

Drew can also eat puffs and cheerios on his own now. This past week I started giving him gram crackers to munch on which he loves.  I've gotten out the straw cups so we can try to get him to figure out how to suck fluids.  This new ability and willingness to eat has given me a bit more freedom the past few weeks.

Drew has developed a new high pitched squeal of sorts.  It's not necessarily annoying just different enough that we took notice.  His had also started babbling with his favorite sounds being "guh".

This kid LOVES watching the Baby Mozart DVD – if I need to get myself some time it’s nearly guaranteed to entertain.

I mentioned in Drew’s 6 month post that he was no longer sleeping through the night consistently.  Sadly not much has changed there. Besides Christmas Drew wakes up to eat during the night at least once or twice.  I checked out a book we've referred to with other kids "healthy sleep habits, happy child" prepared for it to tell me it was time to force him to sleep all night without eating; however I was surprised to read that at his age it is still normal and possibly even necessary for babies to still need a feeding during the night.  Hopefully Drew will outgrow this need very soon and get back to 10+ solid hours at night.

Bringing him into bed with me doesn’t happen very often anymore - which I miss.  Waking up with him in my arms is one of the sweetest mommy moments for me.

This picture was taken way back in November.

Naps aren’t completely predicable either.  There were several days earlier in the month that he didn’t want a morning nap and instead just took one nap in the afternoon with a possible mini-nap while we ran kids around to all their after school activities.  The past few days though he’s gone back to taking a nap in the morning AND the afternoon – much preferred by me.

Still has blue eyes and it’s looks like they are here to stay.

Doesn’t like getting buckled into his car seat these days – he’s fine once he’s strapped in, but has started to fuss when I initially set him in the seat.

On our way to Utah Carly noticed Drew’s first tooth coming in. He actually tolerated it quite well.   His second tooth started surfacing as we were coming home.

December 11th – no teeth

Katie trying to assist me in getting a picture of his teeth on January 3rd

Success! Two teeth!

Another major milestone was reached in Utah.  Drew learned how to roll from his tummy to his back.  I don’t think he’s close to crawling anytime soon, but he’s figured out how to get across a room pretty quick.  There's not much stopping this boy now.

Drew’s mobility means we need to become more aware about what he can reach.  This past week we found him eating a small piece of metal that had broken off a remote control car antenna as well as a rainbow loom band.

We've used up the last of the size 2 diapers and have moved on to size 3.

I still wrap him up at night.

For months I've been trying to get Justin to get our baby saucer out of storage, but Justin lost the key to his Dad's store where we’d put things when we were selling our house so we had to wait for his dad to pick it up for us.   Drew got to try it out when we got home from Utah and it’s been a great way for me to help him entertained and contained when needed.  It currently sits in my bathroom so he can play in it while I shower.

Drew is starting to sit up though he’s still not super stable and when he falls he falls hard, but he’s getting better.

Drew got his second dosage of the flu vaccination on Wednesday and he didn’t cry or complain at all.  Tough little guy!

While Abigail was having her piano lesson today we played a nearby park.  Drew had his first experience in a swing.

He LOVED it!

One thing that hasn’t changed is how much we love this little boy!

12 on the 12th

Last year Abigail and I were running a few errands on her birthday and we ended up going out to lunch – just the two of us.  She’s remembered that and really wanted us to go out again this year.  Since her birthday was on Sunday we snuck out on Saturday night after her basketball games and enjoyed a late dinner at Red Robin.  Before dinner we made a quick stop at Michaels so she could redeem a small portion of a gift card she received from a friend.  It pleases me very much that she’s recorded all the gift cards she received in her ledger notebook as well as the $1.63 she spent at Michaels.  Future accountant? Perhaps.  Dinner was so fun.  Abigail is such a great girl and I enjoyed spending the evening with her.  Definitely need to do that more often.

Sunday morning came bright and early (darn that 9am church), but Justin woke up early enough to make birthday waffles anyhow.  Abigail had an interview with the bishop to get her temple recommend at 8:30am so we were out of the house even earlier than normal.  She’d already had her interview the week prior for her advancement from primary to the young women’s program.

She was called up to the stand and stood as tall as our bishop (we measured when we got home and she’s almost 5’ 6”).  When kids graduate from primary they are asked to recite an article of faith to the congregation.  Abigail chose the eighth:  “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly.  We also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”  All the youth met together on Sunday, and there’s no weekday activity this week, so she hasn’t had a chance yet to really meet with her beehive class; however, her beehive leaders came over Tuesday night and introduced themselves and got us excited for her to be in YWs.  They are going to be fantastic leaders for Abigail – I’m so excited for her.

We had the Fletcher’s over on Sunday for dinner and dessert (though Tami was home with Hallie and Hannah who were both running fevers).  Since she had cake at her party, Abigail requested Oreo Madness on her birthday.  Back when she couldn’t eat any egg we often had Oreo Madness for her birthday – it was a yummy throwback to years past.

Grandma and Grandpa Fletcher brought more gifts for the birthday girl.

And just so we can always remember what our eldest was like at 12, here’s a bit about Abigail:

Abigail leaves to catch the bus at 6:50am.  I am so grateful Justin has been able to get up with her in the morning and drive her to the bus stop so she doesn't have to walk alone in the dark.

Abigail loves creating.  She's put aside duck tape for the time being and has gotten into doodling and loom band bracelet making lately. During the past three months Abigail participated in an after school art club once a week and made lots of fun creations with glass, pottery, shrinky-dinks, rubber, etc...

Abigail has been taking piano lessons at the Chopin Academy for nearly eight months now.   Her teacher has worked with her on improving her technique and playing with more dynamics.  Abigail enjoys her lessons and would actually like to have longer than 30 minute lessons, but I've noticed she seems to play much less at home and she doesn't seem as passionate about it.  She is so talented that it's hard to see.   I hope she'll continue to want to progress and continue improving her talent.

Abigail was hired for her first babysitting job back in November and another in December.   She's taken the babysitting course through the Red Cross, so she's officially certified, but we've been trying to keep her to ourselves until she was twelve.   However, a few friends asked and we relented.

This last year Abigail has been growing out her hair.  It's been hard for me to let her brush out her curls and put it in a ponytail day after day.  She would actually love me to do her hair more often (besides curls) but for now it’s a rare treat.

Has zero interest in makeup (yeah!).  I offered to put a little on for Halloween and she wasn't interested.  I can't even get her to put on chapstick to keep her lips from getting dry and cracked.  She's about as low maintenance as a tween could be.

She does however want permission to paint her finger nails; a pet peeve of mine.

Last year we took her to a dermatologist 2-3 times for the small dots (milia) she's had around her eyes since she was a toddler.   Through creams and actual extraction (quite painful) her eyes were looking so much better, but when we took a break from going to the doctor those darn little dots came back.  Abigail doesn't want to keep getting treatment so it looks like the dots are likely here to stay.

In November Abigail started mentoring at the elementary school one day a week after her school gets out. She got assigned to help, Mrs. Beck, her fourth grade teacher. Knowing how well Abigail does in math, Mrs. Beck has her helping the students with math.

Abigail is slow (like her Dad) when it comes to getting out the door.   I'm glad I'm still in bed when the two of them are on their own in the mornings.  When we are going somewhere as a family Justin or Abigail will be the last one in the car 95% of the time.

Abigail is well skilled in delay tactics.  Whether it's making us wait sometimes hours for her to get the dishes done (and far too many parental reminders) or her sudden desire to chatter when she's supposed to be in bed.

Abigail has friends.  Oodles and oodles of friends.  Her personality seems to mesh well with just about anybody so she makes friends really easily.  Scaling down invitees for her birthday wasn't easy.

Still doesn't like potatos (baked, mashed, or soup) however she does enjoy funeral potatos, french fries, and hash browns.  Doesn't like olives, raw tomatos, raw peppers, or carbonated drinks.  Overall though she’s not too picky.

Still isn’t comfortable with fire so she’s pretty reluctant to make anything on our gas range.  She burned her finger removing a candle from her birthday cake so I think she’ll continue to be quite cautious.  She can bake cookies completely on her own though.

Is beginning to show an interest in media – it wasn’t until this last year that the girls ventured into watching movies with actual people.  Until recently anything we watched was appropriate for the entire family, which basically meant it was animated.  We’re still pretty strict about what she watches and they’ve only watched a handful of movies (I think the first was Percy Jackson or the first Harry Potter), but there’s no turning back now.

Still no personal electronic devices of her own, though she’s started asking for her own cell phone.  We have a spare phone and iPod that she can use with permission, but nothing of her own and no iTunes account.  I thought for sure one of her friends would give her an iTunes card for her birthday, but thankfully we’ve got more time before we enter that world.

I thought it would be fun to look back at the last 12 years…

I love this girl. I couldn't imagine a better suited first child for this Mom.  Our family is so blessed that she's ours.

Abigail’s Birthday Party

Abigail’s birthday is January 12th and it always seems to sneak up on us coming right after the holidays – this being a year she gets a birthday party I knew I needed to have my act together before we left for Utah.  A few months ago she decided she wanted to have a monkey cake so we had a theme pretty early on.  She passed out her invitations on the Friday before break – I would have preferred to have them ready for her the day before that though because I think a lot of the girls stuck them in their backpacks and didn’t see them again til school started back up – but anyhow, a date (Friday, January 10th) was picked and invitations were out.

A wonderful (yet difficult) thing about Abigail is that she has lots of friends.  She makes friends so easily.  We have a great group of girls in our ward that she could choose from, friends from her soccer team, friends from her basketball team, friends from school, friends in the neighborhood, etc…  We narrowed down the list to 16!  Never, have we invited that many kids to a party… until now.  Now that she’s in middle school, all of the girls she invited (besides her cousin) go to the same school so it’s nice that they all know each other.

Friday night was the big night.  Our family enjoys games and we tend to be a tad bit competitive so we decided it would be fun to do some minute-to-win-it games.  Yes, we’ve done these in the past (and likely will again in the future) but they are always so fun.  Unfortunately, I was orchestrating the games as well as taking the photos so I didn’t get pictures of all the different challenges.

How’s it Hangin? – using a banana tied to a string, competitors must move two oranges into a hula-hoop

Separation Anxiety – players must sort 50 skittles, one-by-one, into cups in a set color order

This Blows - player must continually blow up a balloon and expel the air from it to knock a tower of cups off of a table

Face the Cracker - using only the face, move crackers from the forehead to the mouth

We also did a white elephant gift exchange we titled – Monkey Madness.

We had 14 guests attend, plus our kiddos!

Time for cake and of course, banana splits

Abigail accidentally blew out some of her candles while we were singing to her

Oops!

With 14 guests, Abigail got more than enough birthday presents!  Her cousin got paybacks from Abigail’s creative wrapping of her Christmas present by wrapping Abigail’s gift card in multiple bags and boxes.

Katie always seems to be quite popular with the girls’ friends.

The girls got a little creative with the discarded wrapping paper.

And a little rambunctious with the leftover items from the minute-to-win it games.

We ended the evening beating an adorable monkey to pieces just to get a little candy.  Not sure I’ll ever to a piñata again – some girls were quite feisty.

We were shocked that by 9:10pm all of the girls had been picked up and we declared the party a great success.
