We decided to head to Utah for Christmas this year as long
as the weather was looking like the driving conditions would be good. Our last day of school was December
19th so it gave us several days in which we could leave and have the
flexibility we needed to get there before the Christmas festivities. Most other years we don’t get out of
school until just a few days before Christmas. We hadn’t been down to Utah for Christmas since 2013 and
besides a couple quick trips down for my Grandma’s 100th birthday in
2015 and Lexy’s funeral in 2016 we hadn’t been in Utah for more than a couple
days in far too long. The kids
were super excited. Justin and I
don’t like driving in general and certainly not in poor conditions. We decided we needed to take my car
down since it has AWD, but with seven people in the car it has little to no
storage space. We have a cargo
rack for the roof, but we still needed to pack SUPER light so we knew we
couldn’t bring Christmas gifts with us. Our original plan was to open gifts the night before we were
planning to leave (Dec 20), but at the very last minute I decided we should instead
open presents the morning before.
It was definitely the best choice – morning felt more Christmassy and it
left us the rest of the day to pack up and get the house put back in order
after the mess that inevitably ensues with opening a bunch of gifts. Justin still had to work that day so we
had to wake the kids up early so he could still get to work at a decent time.
It was a fun morning.

Thankfully we still have a few kiddos who’s lists are simple
– rough estimate is that 90%+ of the items included on Katie and Drew’s list
are candy.
