Our First High School Basketball Season {Carly}

Carly wasn’t sure if she’d pursue basketball in high school.  We encouraged her to give it a try but didn’t pressure her.  We were excited that she decided to tryout and looked forward to our first season of high school basketball.  (Abigail stopped playing when she entered high school and instead played club volleyball during the spring season of her freshman year).

The girls program at our school isn’t the strongest and all the girls that tried out for a team made it.  (The boys’ team went to state this year and played in the championship game).  Carly was on the JV team and got a lot of playtime.  After weeks of practice and playing in the first couple games there was quite the snafu.  I got a call from the varsity coach early one morning and he explained that he’d accidently left Carly off of the official team roster.  He owned up to his mistake, but because of the rules Carly would need to get ten practices in before she could play in any more games.  That’s ten additional practices starting that day – a month into the season.  Which meant she had to sit on the bench the next several games.  Major bummer, but Carly didn’t seem to get upset about it and showed up to every practice and game, even if that meant she was sitting on the bench  I’m sure it was awkward for her since few people knew why she wasn’t playing.  I’m proud of her for staying positive.

Carly is a strong player at every sport she attempts.  The coaches really encouraged her to join them for year round play, but she has too many other interests and other sports she likes to play.

The last game for JV was on January 29; however, they didn’t hold the end of the season banquet until March 5.  Carly’s coach really likes Carly and I loved that during the banquet she told everyone (including the girls on the varsity team) that Carly could out pivot any one of them.  Her coach picked a word to describe each of the girls and her choice for Carly was “Determined”.  Carly puts it all on the court and doesn’t hold back.  Love that about her!
