McTeacher Night

Last night was McTeacher Night at our neighborhood McDonalds. A portion of all sales went to our elementary school. The fun part is that the teachers and principal are working. Abigail’s teacher was on clean-up duty and her principal was manning the fry station. It was so fun for the kids to see the teachers outside of the classroom.

One More Do

Jason’s hair naturally just lays flat against his head. I don’t even comb it. Since we’re all about the hair lately, we spiced things up a little today.

I'm the Winner!

Haven’t we all had a conversation that went something like:
Woman #1: Oh, my house is such a mess!

Woman #2: There’s no way it could be nearly as messy as mine.

Woman #1: I’ve been in your house a thousand times and it’s never been a mess. You don’t know how messy a house can really be.

Woman #2: I’m sure it can’t be THAT bad.

I had a similar conversation this morning and the competition was on. I promised a friend I wouldn’t pick up a single thing and when she came by she could really see my house in all its disastrous glory. When she arrived I took her on the brief tour. We walked past the Balloon Graveyard, through Polly Pocket Lake, and into Ground Zero.

It was an easy win for me. Of course she tried to argue, but we both knew she never stood a chance!

Instead of feeling embarrassment for my serious lack of household organization, I feel a twisted sense of pride. My friend can now return to her home with the comfort that it really isn’t THAT bad.

If anyone else needs a boost… me and my home are here for you.

Trading Do's

I guess it’s just human nature to want what we don’t have. Carly wants short, curly hair like her big sister and Abigail wants long, straight hair like Carly. Since Carly got to have her hair styled special yesterday for her birthday, Abigail wanted her hair done special today.

Is it just me or do they look so much different just by trading hair-dos.

Happy Birthday Carly!

Carly celebrated her 4th birthday today and what better way to celebrate than to have a party. Having a princess party was perfect for Carly’s first birthday celebration with friends. Justin was able to leave work early and thankfully his Mom was able to come and help as well.

Carly often asks to have her hair curled, but I rarely have the time. For months I’ve been telling her that we’ll curl her hair for her party. I think I’ll curl it more often. She was so cute!

The first guests…

Eagerly waiting for the rest of the guests…

Decorating princess crowns…

Everyone was more than willing to help open presents…

Carly was truly spoiled and loved every single thing she received.

(She’s so excited to play her new computer game – thanks Mom!)

It was a fabulous group of girls and they all looked adorable in their fancy clothes.

Shortly after the princess party we had a family get together. More presents, more fun, and more yummy cake.

Thank you everyone for making Carly’s birthday wonderful!

Our Bookworm

In honor of Read Across America Day, I’d like to dedicate this post to our family bookworm. Abigail has always loved books. Even before she could read she was reciting books word-for-word (her favorite was “Are you my mother?”) – this girl has an amazing memory.

I LOVE this picture of Abigail quietly reading a book when she was two.

Abigail was reading quite well shortly after her third birthday and there’s been no stopping her since. Abigail’s love of reading is on the brink of being an addiction. It’s not unusual for her to get so involved in a book that she can’t put it down until she’s read the entire thing.

Completely oblivious that I’m even taking a picture:

Abigail is thrilled that today at school she gets to spend most of the day reading books. We love our little bookworm and hope she always has a strong desire to read and learn.

Two Thumbs Down

Justin and I haven’t been on very many kid-free dates since Jason was born. Last night Justin arranged for his Mom to babysit and we decided to go to a movie. There’s a new “dollar” theatre nearby so of course we had to check it out. The only movie playing that sounded entertaining was “I Am Legend”. I checked out the showtimes on fandango and read their brief description:
Robert Neville (Will Smith) is a brilliant scientist, but even he could not contain the terrible virus that was unstoppable, incurable and manmade. Somehow immune, Neville is now the last human survivor in what is left of New York City, and maybe the world.

So after a quick stop thru the Panda Express drive-thru we were headed to the movies. Twenty minutes into the movie I was ready to leave. I like suspenseful movies. What I don’t like is scary movies. Movies that leave you sleepless. Movies that make you want to leave the bathroom light on all night. Movies with horrific images you can’t get out of your head. Had I clicked on “read more” on the fandango description I would have continued reading:

But he is not alone. He is surrounded by ''the Infected'' — victims of the plague who have mutated into carnivorous beings who can only exist in the dark and who will devour or infect anyone or anything in their path. For three years, Neville has spent his days scavenging for food and sending out radio messages to find any other survivors. All the while, the Infected lurk in the shadows, watching Neville’s every move, waiting for him to make a fatal mistake. Perhaps mankind’s last, best hope, Neville is driven by only one remaining mission: to find a way to reverse the effects of the virus using his own immune blood. But his blood is also what The Infected hunt, and Neville knows he is outnumbered and quickly running out of time.

Knowing that Justin was enjoying the show, and being the selfless wife that I am, I sat through the remaining 80 minutes of torture. Eyes closed. Ears plugged. Crushing Justin’s hand. He owes me BIG time for this one. We’re watching “27 Dresses” next time.

A Taste of Spring

This past week was mid-winter break, not to be confused with Spring Break which will take place in just six weeks. It may sound strange, but I love having days off of school. The girls haven’t reached the stage yet where I have to find things to keep them busy with by planning little field trips and outings. We were able to spend most of the week taking it easy at home. I’m a home-body anyhow so I loved it. It was a great week and although it wasn’t our “spring break” it sure felt like it. The weather has been wonderful. Once again the girls are playing outside – eating otter-pops and writing with sidewalk chalk. There’s been bike rides, long walks, and playing with friends. Justin and I joke around that there aren’t too many places in the world that you don’t see your neighbors for 8 months out of the year. We certainly feel that way here. During the summer we visit with our neighbors nearly every day. Yesterday they were shocked to see how much Jason has grown since they last saw him (as a newborn). I’m sure we’ll see plenty more rainy days before spring really does come, but we’re certainly enjoying our little taste of spring while it lasts.

Poor Jason isn’t quite old enough to play outside with the big kids, but he definitely enjoyed watching them.

My Style?

During a conversation with some friends yesterday we were discussing paint colors and one friend expressed that she’s a cool colored person. She pointed out a few of the rooms in her house that clearly fit her “style”. I knew immediately I don’t know what my style is. Our first few paint jobs didn’t exactly turn out like we’d hoped. When Abigail was an infant we tried painting her room a soft pale yellow (perfect for any baby’s room)… the result was a bright summer sunshine yellow. Sadly, the yellow room is still there today. Since then we’ve tried to play it safer, in fact my house is painted the exact same color that the majority of my friend’s house is painted and I like it, it’s safe.

Last spring I began searching for new bedding. We bought our current duvet cover on clearance when we got married. I didn’t love it then and certainly don’t love it now. It’s been pointed out countless number of times, I don’t make decisions very easily, especially decisions based on style, a style I certainly don’t have figured out.

Here’s what we know. We don’t like our light “natural” colored maple cabinets and wood floors. We prefer dark wood. I love, love, love our new bed… it’s a deep, dark, beautiful wood that will never go out of style (I hope).

Anything we own needs to be washable and durable. Although beautiful and elegant, a light colored silk duvet cover isn’t going to cut it.

Justin says he wants color, but I doubt he’d be happy with this. After a few days, I don’t think I would be either.

This on the other hand is bright, but not as overwhelming. It looks like a nice piece of patterned paper I would buy. But do you want a huge 108” x 92” piece of patterned paper dominating your bedroom? I don’t know... you tell me. Too juvenile?

Maybe I need to go with a smaller design… a little more classic. Am I classic?

Is it possible that after 9 months of looking that a duvet cover in my “style” has yet to be created? Would something ever really jump out at me as the “one?” I have my doubts. Any thoughts and opinions would be appreciated. Just look at the color of my walls… I’m easily influenced (thanks Tara).

One more

Jen, is this the one you just bought?

"Tagged"

My friend Chrystie “tagged” me on her blog. This is my first time being tagged so I certainly can’t refuse. Here goes:

Two names you've gone by: 1) Hippo (a nickname given to me by my neighbor Colby in 3rd grade – it stuck with me all through high school) 2) Holl (used by my tagger, Chrystie or “Chrys”)

Two things I’m wearing right now: 1) Jeans 2) an oversized T-Mobile t-shirt (I have way too many free t-shirts & I wear them far too often)

Two things I want (or have) in a relationship: unconditional love and 100% forgiving (I’ve been trying to get with Jason to sleep through the night & even when he’s cried for nearly an hour, he still gives me a big smile in the morning… that’s love!)

Two of my favorite things to do: 1) sleep and 2) eat

Two things you did last night: 1) met my in-laws at Red Robin and had a yummy (and free) meal 2) played Princess UNO with Justin and the girls (we love this version)

Two people you last talked to: Abigail and Carly (if they don’t count then it was Jackie and Justin)

Two things you’re doing tomorrow: 1) one of the few things I can guarantee is that I’ll be getting out of bed (we have a commitment free day tomorrow) 2) going to the gym - that’s being optimistic ;)

Two longest car rides: I hate driving long distances!! 1) most recently was our drive to Utah for Christmas 2) as a child we had a few family reunions in Minnesota… six kids and a three day drive… not fun!

Two favorite holidays: 1) Christmas 2) Halloween (love chocolate candy!) – Valentines Day is also becoming a favorite, I’m so looking forward to having a fabulous fondue lunch with friends!

Two favorite drinks: 1) fruit smoothies 2) ice-cream shakes (runner-ups: orange juice, chocolate milk, and eggnog)

Two things about me you may not have known: 1) I rarely wear jewelry (including my wedding ring) 2) I would like to learn how to cut and put up crown molding

Two jobs I’ve had in my life: 1) McDonald’s (worked my way up the ladder to a “crew trainer” in high school) 2) I spent a week cleaning water coolers (it was disgusting and you wouldn’t believe how many little parts they have)

Two movies I would watch over and over: 1) Bed of Roses 2)Some Kind of Wonderful

Two favorite foods: Does dessert count? If not then, 1) potatoes 2) warm bread with real butter

Two places I’d rather be right now: 1) somewhere tropical and warm 2) asleep

Two people I tag: 1) Tami B. 2) Carrie A. (and of course anyone else willing to play)

Sitting Up!

Important to note:

  1. Jason can not get into this position on his own
  2. Jason can not get out of this position on his own (without head injuries)

But that fact that he’s gaining some balance is definitely post-worthy.

Half Year Stats

Jason went to the pediatrician yesterday for his six month checkup. He weighed in at a healthy 19 pounds, 8.2 ounces and he’s 27 ¾ inches long. Both measurements put him in the 80-90th percentiles. His head is of course off the charts (smart little guy!) The nurse commented that it’s hard to believe we ever had concerns about his weight.

Growing Up

It’s been almost four years since we brought Carly home from the hospital. She was my smallest baby, just over 7 pounds (two pounds smaller than both Abigail and Jason). She seemed so fragile.

I took this picture a few weeks ago when Carly thought it would be funny to sit in Jason’s car seat (also her old car seat). What happened to my tiny little baby?

Carly is a great helper. She loves doing laundry with me… she hangs up clothes, sorts socks, moves the clothes from the washer to the dryer, folds towels, etc… Carly’s favorite cleaning product is Clorox wipes - she’ll clean off the kitchen table, wipe the toilet seat, and clean the bathroom sinks. Of course she needs a new wipe every 30 seconds, but she’s cleaning so that’s okay. She also loves to help take care of Jason. She loves to be involved whether she’s getting me a diaper, giving Jason his binkie, or helping him take a bath.

(I know... he's getting way to big to still be taking baths in the kitchen sink)

On a rainy Saturday afternoon last month, Justin asked Carly if she wanted to help him deliver something to a friend about a mile away. Abigail had just walked over to a friend’s house to play wearing her rainboots and umbrella. Carly really wanted to use this as an opportunity to get all her raingear on too. So off she went while Justin drove slowly behind. I think he only let her go a few blocks before making her get in the van, but she was determined enough to go all the way.

We love our Carly!

We love our little stinker

Six stinkin’ reasons:

1. Before our trip to Utah Jason was giving me 10-12 hours at night without waking up. Since then we’ve been back to getting up 2-3 times per night. Thankfully he always goes right back to sleep up until at least 7 a.m., but once you’ve tasted the good life, it’s hard to go back.

2. Jason has entered the “I want to sleep in MY bed” phase. This is normally okay, but with him napping twice a day it would be nice to be able to put him down at a friend’s house, the YMCA, or at church. He will still fall asleep in the car, but he’s getting way too heavy to lug around in his infant carrier.

3. I’ve never had a cuddly baby. Newborns have to cuddle with you; they really don’t have any choice. As soon as Jason could wiggle and squirm my cuddling days ended. I have a friend who’s three year-old son would still fall asleep in her arms at church each Sunday. Jason’s only six months old and we’re far past that. This was the last time Jason snuggled with me. I’m glad I took the time to enjoy it. http://fletcherfamilyblog.blogspot.com/2007/11/moments-like-this.html

4. Jason drank his last bottle in the car on our way to Utah. Since then we’ve tried a countless number of times without any luck. I’ve tried different bottles, different nipples, different positions, and different time of the day. No bottle for Jason means no real freedom for Mom.

5. All of my kids started the whole stranger anxiety phase pretty early on… no fun. It appears that Jason might be heading down that road. I’m envious of anyone who’s been able to pass their baby around at church and the kid is completely oblivious. Hopefully we still have a chance to keep it from getting bad.

6. Jason must be one of the gassiest babies. Anyone whose been around this guy knows what I’m talking about… he’s potent!

Six Months Old

Sunday was Jason’s half-birthday! It’s hard to believe my little guy is already 6 months old. To celebrate, Jason ate his first meal – sweet potatoes and corn. He loved it.

As I was feeding him, there was a moment he acted like he was going to sneeze. I made a comment implying it would have been messy if he did. Carly’s response: “He would have bless you’d all over.” So cute!

I’ll post his stats next week when he sees the pediatrician… I'm thinking he’s at least 18 lbs.

Food Storage

So here is one of our attempts at improving our food storage. I must admit we throw cans on the shelf, don't check for dates, and end up using the most recently purchased cans first and leaving the older cans to expire. Hopefully this shelving system helps us make some progress. At least we will clear up some space in the kitchen cabinets. And it was not too difficult to put together, though I broke a brand new mallet in the process and took some paint off.

He did it!

In the last few weeks Jason has started rolling onto his side from this back so today I got out the video camera. He didn’t quite make it all the way, but I think it will only be a matter of days.

Because Jason spits up I don’t put him on his tummy very often. I decided to give him a little tummy time today and this is what he surprised me with.

Happy 6th Birthday Abigail!

This was Abigail’s year to have a birthday party. She decided she wanted to go bowling for her birthday. She was only able to invite a few friends since we had to be able to transport them all. She has so many friends at church, school, and from the neighborhood that it was hard for her to decide. It was a fun group of girls and we all had a great time.

After bowling we took the girls to McDonalds for sundaes. It’s no secret that Abigail likes Icebreakers so we decided to give each of the girls a pack of Icebreakers to take home as a thank you.

We invited Justin’s family over last night to celebrate Abigail’s birthday. Abigail requested a yummy oreo dessert. Much easier than decorating a traditional birthday cake.

Cleaning the Oreo mess:

Happy Birthday Abigail!

“All I want for (my birthday) is my two front teeth”

Before Christmas we teased Abigail that if she lost her other front tooth we could say “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.” Well, she didn’t lose it until today. It’s been really loose for a while now, but unlike her other teeth she didn’t want me to pull it out. Her uncle even offered her $5 if she let him pull it out. She refused - maybe she knew he wasn’t good for the money :) The result – it fell out while she was eating a piece of bread and is nowhere to be found.

Abigail wrote a note for the tooth fairy: “Dear Tooth Fairy, I think I swallowed my tooth. Love, Abigail.”

P.S. Abigail came up with the clever title – her birthday is next Saturday.

Christmas in Utah!

We got home last night after spending Christmas in Utah. It had been five years since we’d enjoyed Christmas with my family - we had a great time. Here are a few highlights:

The girls enjoyed making cookies for Santa. Abigail is allergic to eggs so she wore gloves while she helped frost and decorate.

On Christmas Eve the family got together at my Mom’s and had traditional clam chowder. My Mom made a special batch of clam-free chowder just for me… so yummy. After dinner the kids reenacted the story of Christ’s birth. Abigail was the angel. Carly was too shy to participate (I guess the Rudolph performance was not a real breakthrough). Being the youngest earned Jason the role of baby Jesus.

The grandkids got to open a few gifts from Grandma on Christmas Eve. Grandma is a teacher and gave all the kids books... we love books!

Christmas morning was so fun. The girls were totally spoiled and received far too much. Jason didn’t get anything from us, but my Mom gave him his first truck, among many other things. I think he likes it.

It was a white Christmas for us. The girls loved playing in the snow. Justin went to several stores in search of snow boots and sleds… can you believe they were out? Thankfully, we have some great cousins who were able to supply us with everything we needed and more. Abigail and Carly went sledding with two of their cousins. Lots of fun for them.

Growing up, my family always went to Farr’s ice cream after seeing the Christmas lights in Ogden. We went to the lights with my sister and her family, but skipped the ice cream… we were already too cold. Besides we’d just had ice cream at Chick-fil-a. (Just a side note… we only managed eating at Chick-fil-a three times while we were there… a low for us … and a small disappointment for Justin)

The girls love playing games and made Grandma play many, many times.

(Grandma catching Carly with only one card left… no mercy for a three year-old)

We drove down to Utah so we were really at the mercy of the weather. On our way down we were able to leave between storms and didn’t run into any bad road conditions. We actually weren’t planning on doing it all in one day, but because it was smooth sailing we kept going.

The way back to Washington was a bit different. Although it never really snowed while we were driving, the road conditions could change in an instant. In Idaho it was really windy so the snow would blow onto the road.

In Oregon there were several miles where the road was pure ice. We even saw a semi-truck tipped over on the side of the road (wish I would have had my camera ready for that).

Thankfully, we made it home safely. It was a great trip and we’re so grateful to be blessed with such wonderful families. Thank you to everyone who made our Christmas so special!

Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer

Abigail loves our blog. She enjoys reading and looking at all the things we post. She gets a kick out of knowing that other people look at it too. She especially enjoys knowing that her Grandma in Utah checks it. She’s often asking me to post a picture or video on the blog so Grandma can see it.

Last week Abigail had a “Winter Celebration” at school. A few other Moms and I helped the kids with various craft projects. Abigail got done early and was able to make two reindeer hats, one for her and one for Carly. When we got home the girls were running around the house singing “Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer.” When I got out the video camera Abigail immediately requested I post their little performance on the blog. I told them they had to stand still for part of it, here’s what we got:

I hope this means our girls won’t grow up to be as reluctant to perform in front of others as their parents are.

Just in the nick of time…

Abigail lost her bottom two teeth back in April.
Today she lost her first front tooth.

Glad we got those family pictures taken last month!

My Scarlett Letter

I am feeling the joy and anticipation of Christmas. The girls are so excited to spend the holiday with their cousins and Grandma. I love their excitement and look forward to spending the holiday with family. However, I’m also overwhelmed with the stress of it all. If everything else in life could stop and I could completely focus on the holiday season I’m sure I’d be filled with the Christmas spirit. Life hasn’t stopped if fact it seems to get even busier.

I inherited the curse of cold sores, my Scarlett Letter. Usually I’ll only suffer through one or two a year. They can be brought on if I let my lips get real dry or most often when I get stressed out. I just got over a doozy of a cold sore last week. Last night I felt the tingle (some of you unfortunate souls know exactly what I’m talking about). I didn’t waste any time and applied medicine immediately. (By the way this stuff is expensive $12 for 0.07 oz.) I put more on before bed and even during the night. However, I woke up this morning and my small bump had multiplied into four. I must have been dreaming of packages that didn’t make it in time and minivans sliding off Snoqualmie pass into the ravine below. My only hope is that I caught it early enough that I can keep the cluster from taking over my entire bottom lip. Tis the season to be jolly….
