Today was a beach day! We did some research and decided to check out Makalawena Beach. I’d read that there are often sea turtles here and that was high on my list. The beach is a little difficult to get to. First you have to drive down a broken up road which is recommended only for 4WD vehicles. Our minivan did just fine with Justin’s careful driving. Then from there you need to make the rest of the trek on foot across the black lava fields. The walk is about a mile long and quite hot especially carrying all our beach gear.

We made it and it was easily one of the prettiest beaches I’ve ever been to. There were very few people there when we arrived but it got busier as the day went on. The waves were too rough for boogie boarding and definitely too rough for any snorkeling. We did see a turtle swimming close to shore but no swimming with turtles for us.
We enjoyed some time in the sun and also spent a little time on the north end of the beach where there is a shallow lagoon. If I would’ve had a floaty I would’ve laid in that lagoon all day long.
We didn’t pack a lunch so by this point we needed to head back and get something to eat.
We came back to the hotel and made up some pork burritos and then reapplied sunscreen to head back to Hapuna beach for the third time. Unfortunately the swell that had rolled in made the beach far too hazardous to do much so we didn’t stay too long before deciding to just head back to our hotel and enjoy the pool there. Justin and JKDC stayed at the pool long past the sunset. Abigail had to come up earlier in the evening and work on some homework. She is still in school you know.
