Mount Si Select Basketball

Jason was excited about playing basketball this year and we hemmed and hawed about playing with a select team or continuing through the local parks & rec. department.   Before attending tryouts for the select team I spoke with the guy in charge and explained to him that we don’t participate in sports on Sunday.  I asked him how many of the games throughout the season we could expect to be on Sundays.  He said that based on past years at most only a third of the games have been on Sundays.  He added that he would request Saturday games and that there would be at least two practices each week.  The season would run from mid-October through the beginning of March.  With that in mind, we decided to spend the extra money and go with what we thought would be a more competitive experience for Jason.  Turns out that Jason's team was nowhere near competitive in their league and the large majority of the games were on Sunday.  Jason played in only 5 games due to the Sunday scheduling, and missed the other 9 or so games.  The games we did get to watch were quite frustrating as a good score meant we got 10-15 points at most and only lost by 40.  One game had a halftime score of 30-2.  The boys really struggled to do in games what they learned in practice.  Jason seemed to enjoy practices and overall he didn't let the losing get him too down but was often not very eager to play in the games, understandable so.  The end of the season tournament was supposed to be held the first weekend in March; however, apparently the majority of the team decided to call it quits and not participate.  A disappointing end to a disappointing season.  Honestly, I could tell from the watching their first practice that we had several boys (and parents) on the team that thought they were all that and more.  It’s no wonder they bowed out.   Needless to say, we won’t be participating in select basketball next winter.

I’m surprised, though not at all heartbroken, that the league didn’t take team pictures.  They did however provide the boys with a “free” sweatshirt.  Perhaps the best thing to come out of the season.
