After a successful first season last spring we were excited
to see Abigail playing tennis again this year. Especially after having to take the fall/winter off due to
her knee injury. She played on the
JV team last year and the varsity coach said he’s biggest regret last year was
that he didn’t move Abigail up to varsity mid-season. So basically Abigail was a shoe-in to make the varsity team
this year. They actually had a
much lower turn out this year so most everyone that played last year was on the
varsity team and the JV team was comprised mostly of first-timers. There were only two returning varsity
players this year. It was the
youngest most inexperienced teams Mount Si has ever had. Our high school plays in one of the
toughest leagues in the state. The
high schools we play are hard-core.
Many tennis players in the league at least on the varsity level play
year round and take private lessons.
Mount Si is chill. I really
like both our JV and our varsity coaches.

They are some of the nicest people I’ve ever met in sports
and they are great cheerleaders for the girls – both are retired high school
teachers, but there honestly isn’t a lot of “coaching” involved. During one match I heard the opposing
teams coach giving one of his girls a hard time about her elbow rotation and I
was like, what? There’s an actually form and method to tennis?? – kidding. It’s not quite that lacks, but our
varsity team can’t compete against that level of competition. Anyhow, Abigail played second seeded
singles most of the season with a few matches on doubles with the first seeded
singles player. She won 2 out of
her 12 matches. Some were hard,
hard fought battles that went on for hours and there were some matches (a set
of three sets) that didn’t even last an hour.
The season started at the end of February and the end of the
season tennis banquet was held on Wednesday, May 16 – four days after the
KingCo Tournament. Abigail played
doubles at KingCo with our first seeded singles player. It was a great match, but I think it’s
hard to put to singles players together and expect them to compete against
players that have been playing with their doubles partner all season.
They played on the fourth court – way, way down there on the
end. Makes it super hard to keep
track of the score.
Last year I borrowed a lens and took a bunch of pictures of
the JV girls during the season and this year I only took a few pictures from
behind the fence.

The team had a cool picture taken at Rattlesnake Lake during
the season, which was turned into a huge banner to be displayed in the high
school commons.
At the tennis banquet, Abigail thought it was a little funny
that she was the only KingCo player that Coach Gbow (short for Gibowski) wanted
to place the participation medal around her neck.
She was also voted by her teammates as Rookie of the Year –
which was actually quite a honor considering that 11 out of the 13 players were
rookies on varsity.
And what activity isn’t more fun when you get to play
alongside one of your besties?
