COVID Day 58 – Saturday, May 9

After my windy-camping experience last night was dragging this morning.  I slept in until around 9:30am and then stayed in bed for probably an hour longer. My plan for today was to take the family on a hike across the pass – mainly for the excuse to eat pizza at Village Pizza in the small town of Roslyn.  I wasn’t sure if my plan would come to fruition though since only Drew and Katie were the ones excited about it.  Thankfully I have them because the rest of my family lacks enthusiasm for most activities. Justin and Jason had to do some church deliveries this morning which Justin thought would be done by 11, but they weren’t back until around noon.  Then it takes FOREVER for everyone to rally and get ready.  We didn’t get outta here until around 2pm.  Justin refused to drive so I ended up behind the wheel – it was an hour and a half drive to the trailhead and the last half hour or so was on a dirt road with lots of potholes, narrow roads and steep drop-offs. I don’t like to drive much in general so this was way out of my comfort zone especially when there were cars coming the other direction and we had to squeeze by each other.  Yikes!

The trail wasn’t marked well at all, but we ended up finding our way.  The trail reports listed the hike at 6 miles with very little elevation gain (we gained all the elevation on the drive up the mountain); however, we actually only ended up walking about 3.5 miles and there were definitely a few steep hills in there.  Not a strenuous workout, but the views were amazing!

We had a stretch of road that still had snow and was quite muddy

Justin conceded to driving down the mountain and he took it much faster than I drove up it (so bumpy!) – we called ahead for pizza, but still had to wait about 25 minutes for our order once we arrived.  CKD and I walked around the town to find a spot we could sit and eat.  Not many options when the parks are closed.  We found a nice bench around the block with a high curb for additional seating.  We ordered one large pizza, five meat “stix” and one cheese stix.  Tons of food!

We only ate about half of what we ordered, but that left lots of leftovers for the next day.  We also treated the kids to a smoothie at McDonalds before getting on the freeway home.  So fun, so yum!

  • May 9: Confirmed cases in Washington state – 16,891 with 931 deaths.  There are no more than 4 million cases worldwide with more than 277,000 deaths.
