Another surprisingly good day today. The kids each had a small chore to do and spent a lot of the morning reading. Katie and Drew were back in the closet for several hours today reading and listening to “scary stories.” I spent several hours going through pictures.
Katie and Drew had their first online piano lesson today and it went really well. We need to figure out a better arrangement for the phone so Kori can see both the pianist and the piano keys before next week. Today we just rested the phone at the end of the keyboard.
All of my kids have surprisingly learned to play the piano very quickly. Drew is no exception. He’s only had lessons for a few months and is speeding through music faster than his teacher has ever seen a student progress. Today he surprised her by playing a song backwards. I was in the other room while he was playing it and wasn’t quite sure what was going on but apparently earlier today he figured out how to play the song from end to the beginning and shocked his teacher. Thankfully it’s more of a sign of intelligence than that of being a dyslexic pianist. Ha! I bribed him with a jolly rancher to let me record him playing it both normally and backwards.

Justin suggested that we go on a hike when he finished with work. A friend of Jason’s reached out to me this morning to ask if Jason could come over to their house today or tomorrow. It’s so hard to know what to do and say. We are really trying to comply with the social distancing but there’s definitely some grey areas to that. In the end I decided it wasn’t a good idea and instead suggested getting the boys together outside and offered to pick up the friend and have him join us on the hike. The game plan was that Justin would be done around 4:30pm, however in the end he was getting on yet another call at 5pm so we decided to leave without him. Abigail was already planning on hiking Rattlesnake tonight with a friend so Justin was able to catch a ride with her and met us up at the top of Rattlesnake and hike down with us. Carly was babysitting again tonight so she didn’t join us. Drew is an amazing hiker. Actually all of the kids do great, but Drew led the pack up and kept a great pace even for me and I tend to walk fast. We didn’t linger long at the top - “social distancing” and all. Actually the trail was much busier than I expected and we weren’t able to stay 6 feet away from everyone we passed on the way up and down, but we did our best and used hand sanitizer. There’s actually been quite a bit of uproar from the community lately regarding how many people have been enjoying the outdoors. A lot of people are demanding that our governor issue a mandatory shelter-in-place order to keep people at home. I see both sides. Without the shelter-at-home order there’s a lot of grey area regarding what’s acceptable which leads to a lot of shaming from people that don’t think your taking things seriously enough.
It was already after 8 when we got home so it was quick shower and a quick dinner of grilled cheese and tomato soup for the littles. Justin and Jason watched something on TV while I took advantage of the opportunity of settling into my comfy chair in my room since Justin wasn’t working in there this evening and caught up on some scripture study. The girls are still “working“ on their room. Abigail is trying to purge and sort through her overabundance of stuff (and likely still spends a ton of time on her phone like her sister Carly).
- March 20 – Statewide count 81 deaths from 1,152 cases. U.S. deadline to file taxes was pushed back to July 15. Non-essential travel was restricted between U.S. and Mexico border. Governor Inslee did not issue a shelter-in-lace order during his news briefing but said he could take legally binding action if people did not take proper steps for social distancing. Playgrounds and sports courts across King County were closed. Fields were open for non-team activities.
